How to Pack for a Yoga Retreat in the Peruvian Jungle
You’ve booked your yoga retreat (yay!), and now the packing begins. If you’re anything like me, packing for a retreat is a mix of excitement and confusion—especially when you’re trying to figure out what’s absolutely necessary and what you can leave behind.
Having been to my fair share of retreats, I’ve learned some things the hard way. Like the time I went to a retreat in the desert and forgot to bring warm clothes for the cold nights! I ended up wearing the same sweater every evening, and trust me, it wasn’t the best look. Or the time I packed "fancy" clothes for a retreat in Italy—only to spend the whole time in cozy yoga clothes. So let’s make sure we’re packing smart for this jungle adventure!
Here’s what I’ve learned over the years about packing for a yoga retreat in the Peruvian jungle, so you can enjoy the experience and leave the stress behind.
1. Layers for All Occasions
The Peruvian jungle can be intense. It’s warm and tropical during the day, and even at night, the temperature usually stays warm. But there are moments when it can get a bit cooler, so it’s still a good idea to have a light layer on hand.
What to pack:
A cozy hoodie or lightweight jacket for those cooler moments (you won’t need much, but a little warmth in the evenings is nice)
Comfortable yoga pants/leggings (you’ll practically live in these!)
Light t-shirts and tank tops for daytime activities (breathable fabrics are key!)
A hat to protect from the sun (you can find some great ones here if you don't want to bring your own)
2. Footwear for Exploration and Comfort
While you’ll be doing plenty of yoga, the jungle is also calling for you to explore. Whether you’re heading out on a jungle walk or relaxing around the retreat, comfortable footwear is essential.
What to pack:
Hiking shoes or sturdy sandals for those jungle adventures
Comfy slip-ons or sandals for chilling at the retreat center
Flip-flops for slipping on and off after the pool/temezcal/class
3. Yoga & Meditation Essentials
While we’ll have mats and props, it’s always nice to bring a few things that make your practice feel personal. If you’re particular about your mat or love having a cozy blanket during meditation, bring them along!
What to pack:
Your favorite yoga mat (we have non-slip rubber mats for your use if you don’t want to travel with one!)
A scarf or pashmina; it makes a great meditation prop, impromptu jacket, and cozy travel blanket!
Comfortable yoga clothing (stick with what you feel best in—think cozy, breathable, and practical)
4. Sleepwear for Jungle Nights
Sleeping in the jungle is warm and humid, so you’ll want lightweight, breathable sleepwear to keep you comfortable. It can get a bit cooler in the early mornings, but otherwise, it’s warm all night.
What to pack:
Lightweight sleepwear for warm nights
A cozy hoodie for the early mornings or if you feel a chill after your practice
Soft, breathable socks for walking around your room at night
5. Toiletries & Skincare
The sun can be fierce in the jungle, and the air can dry out your skin, so make sure you’ve packed the essentials to keep you hydrated and protected.
What to pack:
Sunscreen (even when it doesn’t feel hot, you’ll want to protect your skin)
Antifrizz cream if your hair is untamable like mine, it is humid!
Eco-friendly toiletries (keep it simple, we have shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash)
6. A Journal for Reflections
One of the best parts of a retreat is the time to reflect and process. Whether you’re journaling after a yoga session or capturing insights from meditation, it’s great to have something to write with. There will be room in the back of your manual for notes, but if you want to reflect in the mornings or evenings, its better to have a separate journal!
What to pack:
A journal (you’ll want to jot down your thoughts, ideas, and any wisdom that comes your way)
A good pen—one you’ll actually want to write with
7. Personal Comfort Items
I’m all about packing light, but it’s also nice to bring a few items that make you feel at home. Whether it’s your favorite essential oil, a good book, or your go-to tea blend, these small comforts can make all the difference.
What to pack:
Essential oils for relaxation (lavender and eucalyptus are always a good choice)
A book or two for quiet moments
A pillow or blanket you really love if you are very specific on how you sleep! I have a friend who brings her own pillow everywhere she travels.
8. Clothing for Machu Picchu (If You’re Going)
If you’re planning to head to Machu Picchu after the retreat, don’t forget to pack appropriately for the high-altitude trek. The bugs can be serious up there, so be sure to bring long sleeves, bug repellent, and something to protect yourself from the elements. Layers are your friend, especially in the early mornings and evenings.
What to pack for Machu Picchu:
Lightweight, long-sleeve clothing for protection against bugs
A lightweight rain jacket (weather can be unpredictable)
Comfortable shoes for walking/hiking
10. A Bikini for the Pool
The retreat has a pool, and you’ll definitely want to take advantage of it! Don’t forget your bikini or swim trunks for refreshing dips in the water after a long day of practice.
What to pack:
A bikini or swimsuit for the pool
11. A Nice Outfit for Ceremony (Optional)
We’ll be having a beautiful ceremony during the retreat, and if you’d like, you can dress up a bit for the occasion. Nothing too fancy, but it’s a chance to wear something special and feel connected to the sacred experience.
What to pack:
A nice outfit for the ceremony (something you feel comfortable and special in)
12. A Rain Jacket (Absolutely Essential!)
In the jungle, rain showers can happen unexpectedly. Having a lightweight, packable rain jacket will save you from getting soaked during those random downpours. It’s a lifesaver!
What to pack:
A lightweight, breathable rain jacket (you’ll be grateful for it when the rain comes!)
Final Thoughts
Packing for a yoga retreat in the jungle doesn’t have to be stressful. Keep it simple, pack for comfort, and remember that you’re there to reconnect with yourself and nature. Whether you’re practicing under the trees, meditating by the river, or exploring the jungle, having the right essentials will make your experience that much better.
So, pack your layers, grab your journal, throw in your bikini, and get ready to immerse yourself in the magic of the Peruvian jungle. We can’t wait to welcome you to the retreat of a lifetime!
